[after Matthew 27. Mark 15; Luke 23; John 18-19]
That saying about fear of teeth, "Once bitten
"twice shy," ought to apply as much to these
squabbling factions: priests, scribes, and Pharisees;
and even some poor folk from Galilee's
back country. They all have theologies
that clash; they waive their arms like limbs of trees
in a strong wind. Even my quiet kitten,
Asinia---early awakened---said,
"Have nothing to do with this." He is dead?
After just six hours nailed? I think he bled
too much during that scourging, and his head
thorn torn. And now he has a sepulcher?
And certain priests are asking for a guard?
All weekend? And my seal to make it sure?
Oh, that is rich, the best of ironies---
they bury him like kings are. Who can please
them? They demanded that I have the man
killed, then return to ask that I secure
him tomb? That proves the words that I had written
were accurate, the sentence not too hard;
proof that I did the very best I can.
