Footnote: On The Outer Limits

That closing theme, not
haunting, but beckoning to
those deep space pictures:
I was six years old and these
images were not fiction.

Author's Notes/Comments:

That supreme, and all too brief, series, Outer Limits (the version from the early 60's) inspired my interest in astronomy, not just with the science fiction themes (which, then, I often did not understand), but also most especially with the astronomical photographs that formed a slideshow at the end, accompanied by the most beckong music. I have only my parents to thank for the gift of a telescope I was never allowed to use at night, and for also destroying several years of astronomical magazines that had been given to me by a family friend. Their opposition to astronomy ensured that I would not be exposed to it sufficiently to have a career.
