[mundanely known as John Jones, 1810-1869]
In a republic of democracy,
no trappings of an aristocracy
must have platforms on which to manifest:
and, as well, with efforts of poetry
no crown or chair should dangle in contest
(no matter how attractively held) lest
we forfeit ancient Christian courtesy
in favor of some prized hierarchy---
which, well disguised, is a worldly bequest.
