Melodies XLIX; A Young Boy's Words To His Father, An Alien, 5

Daddy, please do not take me out of here

before my Mommy's life, and Jeb's, have run

their courses.  You live longer than some stars:

but they do not.  And you know what I mean,

and why I mean it:  to adore and love
them both until their lives' forces go out

like the last flame on some depleted wick

before the cabin is entirely dark.

But even as a darkened shape against

the cloudless, starlit night sky it will be

the place where I acquired my memory

of earth life and all that it is about.

I have been happy in this downhome place,

nor yet quite ready to cross into space.

Starward
