To My College Roommate On Sept. 12, 1976

[after the style of J. V. Cunningham]

This fact, on that day, you made clear to me:

you neither liked, nor sought, my company;

nor would we, any more, take meals together.

We were made roommates by mere circumstance.

Acquaintance, such as that, need not advance

into friendship---nothing in common, whether

or not we take the same course the next morning

(again that is only an act of chance).

One common course, but differences in class

(which caused, I think, your far too candid scorning)

did not cause the idle time too easily pass;

avoiding you, I sought the library's liberty.
