And in the silence - it began to snow

 

I heard the copper chimes, ringing
on a morning wind
They woke me, and I wondered
who was calling me


Outside, a big wind was blowing
and a neighbor's rope
was chafing on a flagpole
Beating time, like an aluminum saint


Rap, rap, rapping
under the weather-beaten stars and stripes
 
And to this, a troop of leaves
were
dancing in the street
 
A metallic symphony
that was going, round and round
in circles,
to the chafing beat
 
A strange spectacle,
but I was
mesmerized and watched
 
Till a dog barked, somewhere over a hill
and suddenly,
the spell was broken
 
All at once, the leaves that were dancing
fell from the air
 
And the aluminum saint, made a prayer
to silence, and fell asleep
 
And everything stopped, including
the chimes


And in the silence – it began to snow.
