Goodnight Sweetheart

Folder:
Family

The words of a song that I thought I'd hear forever,
and the pain in my heart because I should have known better.
While you were in pain and suffering for me,
you were giving me gifts that I couldn't see.
Distant memories seem to be sent from above,
of cherished times in a house filled with love.
Late night talks, moonlit swims in the pool,
were just the beginning of a lifetime of school.
Knowledge always given and only love taken back,
and all the while your body grew slack.
I am so sorry for the pain that I caused,
only now do I see just what I've lost.
My memories of you I'll always hold dear,
with that sweet song echoing in my ear...
"Goodnight sweetheart, goodnight."

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this poem as sort of a "Thank You" to my grandmother, Geraldine Groves, after her death. Since I wasn't able to thank her myself before she died I'd like to show my gratitude to all who read it.
