Charlotte´s Gift

By Giselle Montemayor

Charlotte is a girl with a unique gift since the day she was born she was able to read people’s mind and alter their thoughts. Her grandmother who had the same power was able to explain to her since a very young age that sometimes they could help people by knowing what they were thinking and make their life a little better. She also told Charlotte that their gift was limited and that reading people’s private thoughts could bring her trouble because “once you read someone’s mind you can´t unknown their secrets”.  Her grandma warned her to never alter the thought of a person she loved because it could change the way the relationship worked and become un trusty, never knowing if they are thinking or saying something as a result of that alter thought. Charlotte thought that her gift could became something to regret, so as a little girl she didn’t use it. As she got older and older she thought of ways to use the gift to her favor; by reading someone’s mind during an exam, talking to someone she liked or changing her parents’ opinion about a permission she wanted. With her gift Charlotte managed to be very popular and social, as she always knew what people wanted to hear and when people had problems she had the cure, by changing some of their thoughts. Her first day as a high school senior she was as usual talking with her friends, in the hallway walking by was a guy she had never met before. He wasn’t the most attractive guy but Charlotte was instantly attracted to him. He was the new mysterious guy at school, no one knew anything about him and that made him more appealing to Charlotte as she had the rule to never read the mind of some she liked. For weeks Charlotte wanted to talk to the guy but he was very private and didn’t talk to anyone. The mysterious new guy was always alone. He wasn’t like Charlotte’s regular friends, he wasn’t social, didn’t go to parties, wasn’t athletic and wasn’t into the same music. She wanted so bad to read his mind to know how to get close to him, so one day during lunch time Charlotte sat right in front of him and didn’t say a word. She started to read every corner of his mind and realize his life was as complicated as it gets. He was taken out of his house as a kid because of domestic violence, he went into an abusive foster home, he had been in an out of prison, and he was alone in the world. As Charlotte realized his problems, she thought she could help him; she could alter his thoughts and make him more open with her. The problem was she could change his thoughts but she couldn’t change his memory, because her gift was limited. More and more she started to talk with him and changed his perception of life with out him knowing she had the power to change him but then again some times his memories of the past got the best of him and she had to start over. As they got closer Charlotte started to develop stronger feelings for him, which made it difficult for her as she felt his pain. He also started to develop feelings for her. After 2 months of dating Charlotte decided to tell him her secret since she feel bad about knowing all of his secrets. As she started explaining, he got scared of her gift and questioned if his feelings for her were changed, as his mind was. He was tormented by the thought of her being inside his mind and playing with his thoughts, and she got scared he was right. Every gift comes with a price and she had to learn how to live with the one she had.

Charlotte's gift:

An interesting piece of writing, I think you write well and hold the readers attention as well. Yes how to play fair, if you have such a gift as mind reading, there'd be no privacy of thought.  giselle.gms.
