We all take this course called Life 101
Where the only option is to pass
Because there are no retakes.
We jot down our notes haphazardly even if
They were given by experienced teachers
Because we seldom follow advice.
We rarely review the notes we took before
Each test, so instead of right answers,
We make careless mistakes.
Yet, the purpose of learning is to try and fail,
Try again and succeed, but, we seem to
Make the same mistakes twice.
Some of us even try sneaking glances at those
Beside us, but this only causes us to make
The same mistakes as our peers.
While still others of us skip test days because,
Instead of note-taking and studying, we
Procrastinate and take naps in class.
Some of us don't even bother trying to pass,
We wait for the withdrawal date to near,
Only to find it never gets here.
When the day of the final exam finally arrives,
I hope we have learned from our mistakes
So, with flying colors, we can pass.
I like this one. It's funny when I read this because there's a book out there with the exact same title you have, "Life 101" by Peter McWilliams. Great poem and I agree with you too.
