MIDDLE FINGER OF MEDIOCRITY

The first time I posed for a picture with my middle finger extended was in 1982.  I was a 16 year old ever so certain of my own brilliance.  I wasn’t the first person to do it although I had delusions of originality.  It wasn’t original 40 years ago and it damn sure isn’t original now.

The sad thing is that way too many people are still doing it and it still delusional enough to think they’re cool or clever.  Social media is littered with these poseurs.  It’s just so 20th Century but some people are watching Groundhog’s Day again.  Are we that lacking in originality that we can’t think of anything new?

That middle finger of mediocrity is probably the single greatest symbol of this country’s decline.  Lack of originality should be mocked and ridiculed not rewarded with hundreds of likes.  It shouldn’t be acceptable.  We’re no longer great because we’ve become complacent and we accept and even glorify this mediocrity

Isn’t it time to come up with something—anything better than this?  I don’t think all is lost but we really have to be more innovative and creative.  We really should start pointing downward when we extend the middle finger because that’s where it’s leading us.  And I don’t mean it’s leading us to Hell.  It’s just taking us down from the heights that we want to believe we’re capable of attaining.
