Whenever I write letters or mail bills, I always feel tempted to put the stamp on upside down or sideways or maybe slightly askew or in the wrong place on the envelope in a meager attempt at lame humor. I never do it, however, because I always think of how much pressure these postal workers are working under. Some of them can be set off at the slightest agitation and they do say it’s always the little things that cause the final snap. The camel’s back ends up getting broken by a straw. I wouldn’t want to be held responsible for being that straw breaking the camel’s back—or in this case the instigator that set off a disgruntled postal worker. I could just see one of those guys reading the upside down stamp and thinking, “That’s it!” They say that no one really likes a wise guy and that’s just what I would be. Few people really want to get shot and least of all have their life terminated because one idiot couldn’t handle another idiot placing a stamp on the wrong spot of the envelope. There are times that Bukowski seems to be the only one to come through that job all right—and that’s a scary thought.
