There was a bit

of lightning

in the sky

after the Santana show

we thought

it would be a good idea

to watch the lightning

from the Belmont Plateau

That way you can see

the skyline over Center City

light up like a Christmas tree

we get there

and figure it’s as good

a place as any

to smoke a bowl of hash

One friend notices

that most of the people

hanging out are black

and wonders if it’s safe

“Oh, gee this is a real threat.”

I say to him sarcasm dripping

“We better get out of here.”

He wants to have the driver

shift into reverse to leave

I’m just shaking my head

and saying,

“Just light up the fucking bowl

and toke up.

No one gives a shit about us.”

Hell, most of the people up there

were either getting high

or getting laid

and the cops don’t like

to get out of their cars

when it’s raining heavy

All the real thunder and lightning

was taking place

up in the sky

where it truly belongs
