Sweetbutter Two
The whole town knew
Of the Sweetbutter Two
Who’re Richard & Robert
Of Kent.
Producing a snicker,
A glare, or a shudder
When off to drink
They went.
Both were on warrant
And hid from the sheriff,
Sneaking their whisky
And beer.
In the rain & the mud
Transfixed Robert stood,
Thinking ‘ahh, what have I here..?’
There on the ground,
One flat & one round,
Lay two broken umbrellas.
A gleam in his eye
And a couple of tries,
He joined the two
Of those fellows.
Presenting his friend
The invention right then,
Under the light of a candle,
Richard observed:
‘It works and it serves
Holding it by
The two handles…’
