WALT WHITMAN HOUSE

Free show at Wiggins Park;

ride Patco over to Rand T.C.

& walk past Walt Whitman’s home.

A barbaric yawp may

awaken the learned astronomer

& startle a noiseless, patient spider

but we have to sound that sound

The music will be fine

as the Delaware River rises to the dock

and the old RCA Victor building

now houses condominiums.

A baseball park replaces

the old, historic Campbell soup factory.

We’ll speak not of bygone days

but decaying city or not

at least for this night

the air will be filled with song

and hope for better days

will bloom with the fragrance

of exquisite lilacs.

Author's Notes/Comments:

And thanks to Red Baraat for providing the free music to fill the air.

Twenty Years Later

30, 40, 50 years after first encounters, enjoying what was built 100 years earlier, 50, 30, 20 years ago. We do not plan cities well or preserve our history. Continuity is not a usa priority in too many cities. In Detroit, they tore down The Graystone Ballroom.  - slc

Philly has done all right to

Philly has done all right to an extent.  We have a lot of historical buildings but we also have McDonald's and 7-11 sitting where once great events took place.
