Trees look strong
But they hide behind bark.
And I once saw a tree with thorns
I wondered – why must a tree be afraid
When it gives warmth and shade?
Maybe it was because I laughed at that tree
I told that tree,
“You cannot move,
You will only see one sky
One view.”
And I laughed like a person ashamed.
Because nobody brings in the trees
When the earth grows cold.
And to begin a fire would be ironic
Trying to warm them by burning
The flesh of their brothers
Nobody dries a tree’s leaves when
Unbridled
Cloud-leaping lightning
Dances across the sky
I think we humans envy the trees
Simply because they dance with the wind
They touch the stars
And yet
They are still connected to Mother Earth.
Their roots run deep.
Maybe that’s why they look so strong to us…
But trees hide behind bark.
Maybe it was because I laughed at that tree
I told that tree,
“You cannot move,
You will only see one sky
One view.”
And I laughed like a person ashamed
