Before Renae's Wedding

I see her throwing flowers

and most cherishing every hour,

but look back at the old school chair

and realize there's nothing there.

There's a chair next to it,

and on it I can see a shape:

small, lonely, and dark - almost black.

I walk to it and find it's my heart.

As I pick it up from the chair,

I realize that it's dying,

and I look around, but I'm alone.

But I walk out to find

that dreams do come true.

There she is with husband and kids,

and I find myself with friends,

goats, chickens, and a sweet garden.

So sun and rain splatter our faces

with blessings and God's good graces.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this last year, not long before my then-best friend's wedding.  I was the only one of our group from school that I knew of that still lived at home.  I felt like the last to grow up, and I felt like I was holding myself back and suffering from it, which was a weird (and selfish) thing to think about not long before her wedding.  I made myself sad writing it, so I had to add the happy ending.

I think I prefer it without the happy ending, but that's just me. It's really sweet.
