Chrys Warford's Birthday Party & Psychoanalysis (Short Story)

After blowing out the candles, Chrys Warford begins opening the presents. But halfway in, she is accused of bluffing as the birthday girl. The police get a phone call. When the officer arrives, he inquires in regards to the problem. Chrys Warford writes it out.

Find the area of the surface that is the graph of the equation f(x,y)=x² lying above the rectangle Q={(x,y)|-1<=x<=1,-1<=y<=1}.

The cop pulls out his graphing calculator and solves the problem. The party rejoices, including Chrys Warford, whom sneaks the cop a kiss.

"Just doing my job," asserts the cop.

The blowing of candles is easily interepreted as the raking of leaves, whereas the presents represent leaf bags (the wish being contained within them). The impostor is a kitten clawing open the bags resulting in the pound (the authorities) being notified. The pound catches sleep. He dreams (calculates) of fruitcakes and oily tires which represent the ocean. The kiss is obviously a seagull flying over (kissing) the beach. The beach is just "doing its job" with its low and high tides guided by the moon (the chief of police).
