Okay... I've wanted to have this conversation for a while. I guess now is a good a time as ever (considering Kramer's all over the internet calling a Black man the 'n' word).
Why are some people shocked when we hear about something like this? I heard people say things like, "It's 2006, things have changed". Have they really? Laws have changed, schools have changed, shopping malls, buses, and restaurants have changed. But have people changed?
For some, the changes that were made were was forced upon them. Not all were in agreement that freedom & equality was the right (& only) choice. So, is it really surprising when we hear racist remarks, witness or a victim of racist activity? It's not to me.
I believe Michael Richards (Kramer) simply expressed the way he really feels. He's not alone. There are a lot of people with the same feelings; they just don't say it (in public). He's 57 years old! He can remember a time when it wouldn't have been a black face in the audience with a white performer on stage. Think about it. Some don't miss those times.
My mom is 53. She remembers seeing ˜whites only" signs. They remember them too. My mom can tell stories of a different time. They can too. Some of them (and not just the older ones) just may be walking around secretly wishing things were back ˜the way there were".
I truly believe if it weren't for consequences & repercussions, a lot of those that feel that way would express themselves just like Kramer did. Hell, they'd do a lot more than that. They'd have us upside down with a fork up our ass just like he said.
Here's the video in case you haven't seen/heard it. http://pdl.stream.aol.com/netscape/us/video/2006/11/Netscape-SHOCKER_Kra...
What are your thoughts?
I think for as long as people
I think for as long as people are allowed to have the freedom to leave a situation they cannot tolerate, freedom of expression should over ride someone's hurt feelings, however, as always, there are exceptions and extenuating circumstances toneverything. I think in the end it gets down to intention and harrassment. If someone presses harrassment charges after letting someone know the word, photo, whatever, is offensive and threatening to them, then obviously the other deserves whatever comes down on them. It's one thing to be offensive out of ignorance...quite another to be offensive to knowingly and intentionally hurt.

...and he asked her, "do you write poetry? Because I feel as if I am the ink that flows from your quill."
"No", she replied, "but I have experienced it. "

Genitals displayed in shop windows, strange fruit, tar on skin insulted by chicken feathers - or yesterday when a white lady said to me, "You should vote by absentee ballot,"I know a change gone come. It's been too hard living' but afraid to die". Hang in there is not a very good wish for a black person even in 2013. Not the nigger, the niggardly treatment and niggerish wishes from the mentally challenged aka insane in need of a labotomy. I refuse to be afraid of a word or the asshole using it, unless they have a loaded gun and I can't get my shit out fast enough. ~Lady A~
