if love had an off button

Folder:
separation

if love had an off button,

a pressure release valve,

ctrl+alt+delete, a reset feature

or an electric limiter switch

i still would not suppress love

i wouldn't wipe the hard-drive

and i wouldn't trade love in

for a new and shiny model

with a built-in safety camera

as if love could ever be made safe

i wouldn't research replacements

with all the features our love didn't have

and i wouldn't take love to the junkyard

for someone else to pick-a-part

i would consult a mechanic,

buff out the bangs and dings,

change the oil,

rotate the tires,

replace the spark plugs,

lubricate the brake pistons,

i'd read the owner's manual,

i'd troubleshoot the engine light,

i'd buy replacement parts,

i'd get love running again

but love is not a machine,

and neither is my heart,

but even though our love is broken,

i still have love for you

Author's Notes/Comments:

I'm a carman-mechanic by trade so fixing things is what I do. I was rebuilding a truck set on a Superliner 1 Amtrak fleet car today and meditating on how a broken marriage isn't so easy to put back together. Maybe one of these days I'll stop writing about this break-up but today is not that day.

The metaphors are sharp,

The metaphors are sharp, vibrant, and dynamic! A superb meditation.
