VENUS AND MADHUBALA

Venus greeted me after nightfall
And she was still there with me
After a nap I took while pondering
On enigmas of rise and fall.
Venus is splendidly attractive
Like the legendary Madhubala*
And its luminosity is effervescent
In the stretching galactic gala.
Venus is my nightly companion
Has been so ever since I
Returned to this dusky life
She shares with me a communion
Far and near, hidden yet clear,
I am never unaccompanied
Even in the cloudiest night
For Venus always greets me
And to me she's pure delight
Often she rises twice
In the passage of the hours
Venus and Madhubala

*MADHUBALA: The most beautiful Urdu-Hindi actress of the Indian film industry. Robert Wise, the director of movies like Helen of Troy and The Sound of Music, called her "Aphrodite reincarnate" when he and his team visited India for the premiere of Helen of Troy. And the "Theatre" magazine of Hollywood's columnist described her as "the world's most beautiful actress...who does not live in Beverly Hills". Madhubala (I refer to her as Madhujee quite often, out of respect and reverence for her angelic loveliness) is known to this day as "The Venus of India".
