Sometimes, after a soul-shaking, tiring day,
The setting sun takes me near the tavern,
Where I used to drown my heart's wounds,
With friends and lovers, like me, broken.
Yet, the pull of another group of 'drinkers',
Lost in their love of the greatest Beloved*
Makes me turn away like those 'seekers',
Who await me to drink at that grand abode.
I am happy deep inside for walking away,
From the tavern where I used to be merry,
Jocund and jolly with the veiled saqi,*
Fooling myself and drinking heavily.
Now, I have God's love, filling my being,
And don't need such merry-making,
When I feel sad, I just turn to my Allah,
And He welcomes me with His best greeting*.
