A Twentieth Century Girl Loves One Not Of Her Race

When I told my father of my love

he simply smiled at me,

and told me of how love is blind

that this love could not be.

For you are black

and I am fair

and that is not allowed,

in days where whites are superior

and blacks should not be proud.

But one day, my love, things will change

and it will no longer be

such a challenge to love someone

someone such as thee.

For the day shall come when man will say

together we will stand,

as equals blacks and whites alike,

and join eachothers hands

And then my love we will be

together you and I,

our race will not matter at all

and with that thought I fly,

Away from this worldm my love,

until such time as I

can hold your hand

and be so proud

to have no need to cry.

Author's Notes/Comments:

So I know racism isn't as big an issue as it was during the 20th century and earlier than that but I still feel as though it was a very important issue at the time particularly as the twentieth century was when such acts were passed to enable equality of all races. Apologies if anyone finds this offensive. I did not mean it to be and feel free comment with your thoughts/opinions etc. As always, thank you for reading!

I agree it is HISTORY of

I agree it is HISTORY of great importance to 'some' Americans. Hopefully one day we will grow enough to review it all in it's entirety without the symptoms of traumatic recall. We have a ways to go. All we need is love.

Always good to add...the skin color issue is an American issue...and not one for most other countries near as much as it is America.

"No", she replied, "but I have experienced it. "

Thank you for the comment! I

Thank you for the comment! I must disagree however as  racism is everywhere and has been for sometime and though this poem tackles that of inequality in blacks and white I do want to have an over-arching theme of racism in general therefore I understand why you may believe segregation (particularly in this poem) to be  mostly related to America I  cannot help but notice racism in all countries to some extremes that match that of America. Thank you again though for the comment and I shall take your words on board :)

I agree and didn't mean to

I agree and didn't mean to imply that it is non existent in any other countries, just that Americans dramatize it best, hang on to the pain most when it comes to out and out hatred of someone just for the color of their skin....due to our history. In many other countries it is more of a politically based hate, due to land issues or political disagreements.
