Your Circus

I was the star of your circus

Oh how I made the crowd roar

When the loudness and chaos were over

It was me you'd call out to the floor

And I thought that I was amazing

But I guess I was only a clown

Cause you talked me up onto the tight rope

And then you took the safety net down

I gave you my greatest performance

Hid the fear with my smile on display

But halfway across, I lost balance

You just watched as I began to sway

The audience stared up in horror

Shocked and in awe of the call

Of your name from my lips before landing

But you stood there and just let me fall

I lay there defeated and broken

Consequences of trusting a fool

My breathing now shallow, I wonder

How could you be so damn cruel?

You ushered the crowd out so quickly

Told them to forget what they saw

Cut me off like spare thread on a sweater

Well forgive me for being a flaw

Cause I could have danced circles around the best

Could have been your carnival queen

And maybe I would have if only

You'd let me stick to my routine

But you wanted something outstanding

You wanted a death-defying act

And I wanted to be all that for you

But under the pressure, I cracked

Yeah, I was the star of your circus

Tamed the lion you were, flipped your frown

Only for you to desert me

All alone as the big top came down
