Passages

As my father ages, our conversations stray towards reminiscings & remember-whens - childhood questions unanswered, musings on long-gone relatives - I take notes for posterity's sake. While I tell him of my todays, he recalls his yesters - a time when he shared an office with many co-workers, cramped as most government quarters are. He was a 9 to 5 kinda guy (more like 7 to 3, an early bird since birth). He did his 8 and came straight home to us, his family, his real life. Those office mates derided him mercilessly for not taking the requisite 3 martini lunches or after-hours happy-hours. He paid them no mind. I asked did the abuse bother him at all? He said no, "when they're harassing me, they're leaving somebody else alone."
