Everyone wants to believe it's okay,
And maybe it is, but most likely it isn't.
We tell ourselves that those things
Couldn't happen here, that these
People we know and see everyday
Would never act like that.
It's human nature, when painting a
Picture you can't help but want to make
It pretty, we've gotten good at buying
Into our delusions and believing
The little lies we tell and hear from
Others. It's too damn easy to ignore.
That they disappeared for twenty minutes
And scarred a woman for life, that a
Loveable father would do that to his own
Kids, that even in 2017 we haven't
Progressed as much as we were led
To believe. Paying for silence isn't new,
And I'll never be angry with someone
For wanting to move on, but we must
END this culture of silence, positions of
Power should never be or feel like a
Mandate to another's body. We need
EVERYONE to stop and ask the difficult
Questions about your home, workforce,
Friends and family, and even yourself.
We need to make sure that we aren't
Complicit in any fashion, that we do not
Enable, excuse, or defend these monsters
In any way. Respect and empathy, we
Must teach and re-teach these values as
Many times as it takes. Violations of another
Person's body and consent must STOP.
These conversations are long overdue.
