gods all come in a grand array

of gospels and religion,

all of which righteously say

“ours is the only vision.”

If we lined up all the gods

humankind's called saviour

since the first ape stood erect

the line would stretch forever.

Some gods have been gods of love,

gods of peace and laughter.

Some were gods of fear and fire.

Others, sacrifice and slaughter.

Many folks lead righteous lives

in the service of their lord.

Others force their ways on the world,

spread gospel by gun and sword.

We humans need our gods, no doubt,

some of us more than others.

gods are something we can't do without

if we have our druthers.

When we're born, our slate is blank.

We start out helpless but honest.

Then we have our peers to thank

for foisting their religion on us.

No one's asking us to part

with all that we're believin'.

Let's welcome faith into our heart 

but close not our mind to reason.
