Every time I see or smell the famous Cuban cigars I can’t help but think of my father. It is like a time travel machine that transports me to all the dinner nights and Sunday barbecues’. He always carries his cigar case with him and has two or three Cohiba’s inside. “Making this cigars is an art,” he always says. “…and smoking a Cuban cigar is a unique pleasure that you can enjoy in a short lapse of time.” Every time I am with him and he takes out a cigar, we begin to talk about million of things. Most of them are important to us, usually while he smokes a cigar we talk about our family and the stories of when he was a child. But we will always end up talking about crucial topics like politics, religion, education in Mexico, and a few others. They are always so interesting that I might ditch my friends on a Saturday night in order to stay in and enjoy a long night with my dad talking in the terrace and admiring the reflection of the stars and the moon in the pool. It has and it will always be delightful to share this ritual with him and my family. From my opinion, my father’s cigars represent quality time with him and also my relatives. Every Thursday night he goes to the “Cigar house”, it’s a bar where the cigar lovers, men only, reunite and take a drink or two and relax, maybe even catch a soccer game. He has been going to this place ever since I can remember. Most of his best friends are members of this bar. What he enjoys the most of this place is that he has his own space inside the place’s humidor to store his cigars. It’s impossible to catch the smell of a cigar and not imagine my dads face with a big smile and a cigar in his hand. It is something that enforces his strong personality. As a maxillofacial surgeon he is always in the run during the day, but when it comes to the night he doesn’t enjoy something more than smoking a Cuban cigar with good company. This is somehow his way to release so much stress and tension from work. In other words, the Cuban cigars in my house mean nothing more than; quality time, wisdom, life lessons, and joy.
