............ the old Mans smile .....
the mission's neon cross stands out
in the darkness of the late night rain
standing on the sidewalk looking in
the rain drops leave streak's on our neon
red reflection
reflecting back from the dirty plate glass
window
sign says " no vacancy "
but the preacher steps out saying he
can save our soul for a small donation
sitting under a awning of a old building
on a back street where you can't be seen
watching it rain
I pass the bottle to the old man and ask
have you ever seen the western sky as the sun
goes down turning it's yellows red and oranges
to grey?
or sat along the rivers edge watching the day's
last light reflecting off the water as if it were a
mirror ?
It’s almost enough to make a sinner believe
that maybe just maybe ?
passing the bottle back he light's a cigarette
and hands one to me
an he ask's
do you know a life of loneliness
one filled with pain
living a life with nothing to gain.
surrounded by darkness
overwhelmed with shame
a life without peace
with no one to blame?
it's enough to make you think
there's no maybe's
hell is a sure thing
its a place filled with sorrow with no
end in sight
son if you can still dream of those
western skies or the rivers edge
your in the wrong place and i'd be heading
west
morning came and i faced the eastern sun
smoking our last cigarette the whiskey gone
hey old man did you mean what you said last
night ?
I might of been drinking boy but that wasn't the
whiskey talking
standing there thinking of all the places i'd been
Hey old man i'm out of here 1
where you going boy ?
WEST!
that was the first time I'd seen that old man smile

Wisdom From Unexpected Places
.
I wish I'd gone West sometimes. Life is good here in the Midwest (so far). Been East and South, never West (vacation four days in Vegas is it). Excellent reflection and sharing, Big Sky country, right? - Lady A
