Today

In this country, countless men and women of all races and ethnicities gather daily to convey a common purpose. Unsure of their exact purpose in life, they follow the direction given to them by their advisors. Like birds they flock together; anxiously awaiting the drop of a dime, the simple buzz of time until, as a group, they disappear into the nothingness.

Some have places to go, places they have been, but most stand around lazily speaking of the nonsense of daily life; the useless moments that impact no one.

“Man, it still hasn’t made it upstairs yet!” Followed by, “Oh, now it is.” And once again, the group flocks into the locked steel doors, heading towards the location that they hope will one-day shape their life.

In this country, millions of dollars are spent hourly on the latest fashion trends. Hoping that they spiky-toed knee-high boots or star embroidered denim bell bottoms will one day affects their future, they spend.

Not only money is spent, however. Hours of the day are spent uselessly in front of a reflecting glass. Maybe today will be the day. Maybe today they will need to make a proper impression. Maybe today will be the beginning of their bright and glorious future. One must always be prepared for the best. One must always look top notch.

However unfortunate as it may be, in this country, today is not typically the day. Neither the places traveled nor the clothes worn today will define eternity for the average citizen. No matter what commercial advertising may try to convey, the decision between purchasing a Dasani water or a Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry Vanilla at this moment will not be life changing decision, not today.

This is not to say that life in this country is meaningless. Life is made by a series of choices, a series of todays. Todays that were not useful now added together like 30,000 one dollar bills become meaningful. What can be bought with that life, those 30,000 todays? Hope, love, happiness, and possibly even more life. Do not worry about the individual todays of life so much as the entire sum. There will always be another today. Another today in which you will be “just in time,” and todays when someone will thoughtfully “open it back up.” Be hopeful and don’t waste your todays by focusing only on the smaller picture.

Find a location inside the Pray-Harrold building (or anywhere on campus) and start a narrative based on the people you see starting with the phrase, "In This Country..."

By the way, i don't recall having too many assignments half as interesting as that. Very cool.

Particularly thought provoking, drew me in right off. I think you've said what some people(including myself) try to express to others, in a precise way throughout most of this piece. The last paragraph i feel blurred it just slightly, as i felt it could possibly convey to some that those little nonsenses could be worth it once added up..which seemed to be the opposite of what you were saying prior. While i could be wrong, i don't think that's what you were saying, and i think most would understand that..just maybe with a tinker or two this would perfect. Still strong in and of itself, thankyou for sharing it.
