Born, a brown eyed, poetic princess
To a king and queen
Ready for 100 percent of their attention
Love filled the home like smoke in a hot-boxed Honda
Business trips brought gifts to baby
But took daddy away from daddy’s little girl
Hello Kitty kept her happy til the next time
Enter baby #2 (not me)
Curly head…hazel eyes.
A beauty in a chubby package
Unplanned but accepted
Business trip
To a citrus city…was a bar on the schedule?
Daddy met step-mommy at a bar
See? It does work! It can happen
Brown eyed princess’ life is flipped
Mommy is crying
Hazel eyes is oblivious
Pigeon-toed walking
Princess is getting angry
He’s gone and princess has lost her soul
Two times a month at daddy’s is Princess’ retreat
She-ra dolls line the closet
Clothes we can’t take home
Step mommy is no longer a secret
No longer a sachet with an embroidered love note
She smells pretty and she dresses nice
The cat hates kids and the hisses burn like hot bacon grease
Princess and Hazel eyes play in the dark
It’s how they survive
Loneliness
Mommy seems miles and days away
Trips to far away places
And exciting gifts
Daddy wants to make us happy
But Princess can’t sleep while daddy and step mommy are
Fucking
In the room down the hall
The bed next to us in the motel
The lower bunk in the bunk bed
By now boys are taking over princess’ mind
She lets them touch her in places
Only she knows about
From the magazines daddy has beside his bed
She reaches out but no one grabs hold
So she continues to be consumed
With thoughts of Jay, Fred and all the other black boys on 33rd street
Playing hide and go get it at Tyeann’s house
Beatin boys with bike pedals
Waiting for David to get out of jail
Mommy is ill
Wondering what happened to her princess
Sending her to therapists
Analyzing her every word
Medication? Prozac? 12 years old? Do they actually do that?
Mommy listens to phone calls
Questions everything
Reads letters
Keeps poems and misinterprets them
Reads diaries
Calls princess names
Slut
Whore
Brat
Bitch
Satan
We could go on
The many days princess cried and hit and kicked
All for daddy
No one seems to understand
So why didn’t he come?
Why was the only time he came
To pry Princess’ hands from the leg of the bed
Yelling- “I’ll break your arm if I have to!”
And then he was gone
Summer before 7th grade
Disappointment
Killed Princess’ will to go on and proceed
Traumatized her in a silly way
But he left her hangin
So I, Princess, hated him
Visits became less
Shorter
And the relationship blossomed because princess was still
Daddy’s little girl
Now she’s sexin
With the white crip named Aaron
Watch out now!
Mommy’s reading the diary
She knows about her 14-year-old princess
Settin off alarms at Montrelle’s
Sneakin boys in the house
She knows about them doin 69 while listenin to 2pac and SWV
Mommy’s too sick to know where brown eyes is at all time anyway
Gift of gab
Baby girl can talk her way out of groundation
And Aaron-deprivation
Now princess is taken advantage of
But because of her record
This situation is misconstrued
She soon becomes Daddy’s little girl again
Sent to his dungeon…but is treated
Like a princess
He showers her with gifts and looks beyond her mistakes
Step-mommy is her new shopping partner
Then all hell breaks loose
14-year-old princess? Pregnant?
How could this happen?
Was this because they would drop her off at William’s dark house?
And pick her up after 10?
Daddy becomes distant.
He weeps daily
He can no longer look in the brown eyes of
His princess
Brown eyes, in pain and missing daddy’s love
Wants it all back
So she disconnects her emotions and takes a trip
They erase the mistakes and all is well
30 minutes later they have McDonald’s and princess is once again given gifts
All in one day
Pain dominates her heart
She looks for an escape
She kills her daddy’s trust and he let’s her go
They die in each other’s brown eyes
Princess finds powder and puts it in her nose
And she finds a new way to get money and a ride to school
Being pinned down isn’t rape and waking up to him on top of you isn’t rape
Now princess has a new seed growing
This one will blossom into a beautiful rose
Hayden
March 9, 1995
11:32 am
Princess’ 16-year-old life changed
Laying next to her is her prince
She is now a queen
He is light caramel complected
With curly black locks
Outstretched arms and 10 toes
He is beauty and she is naïve to the transformation of her young life
Her body is imperfection
She now carries a diaper bag as a backpack to school
Her books fit perfectly into the basket in the stroller
10th grader on Welfare
Foodstampin her lunches
You go girl!
Baby daddy, age 31?
Incarcerated
Lewd & lascivious is he
He will never know his son…because he is no daddy
Prince charming comes in, riding his white horse
With his turq rag hanging from his back pocket
Flapping in the wind
His fingers twisted in the middle
His 10 or so ponytails turned her on
And his tightly creased Dickies were impeccable
His stories of YA entertained her
She was gonna save him
And he was gonna change her
Baby Hayden knows prince charming as daddy
Sitting in the back seat lip-syncing “I once knew a trick named Annie Mae
Oooooooooh”
If only we were never dumb as children
Fights and break ups persist
Hayden clings to grandma while brown eyes clings to prince charming
Confusion keeps her at ease now
Pain is her drug of choice
She doesn’t need friends!
She’s got her man
He’ll fight back when she hits him like a dude
And when they fuck
It’s like heaven if there is one
They move up
He moves out
He gets locked up
She gets knocked down
She moves up
She kicks him out
He moves in
He finds his true love
He moves out
Princess dies and there she is
Poetry becomes her obsession
She can’t stop writing
So much to say
So little time
“To all the men I’ve loved before”
Looking in to the darkness for light
She searches to find love in the same place her daddy found step mommy
Truth be told- it can happen
True love story!
20 years strong and they still be fuckin…I think
Princess is not oblivious…she’s only stubborn
Danny knocks on her hard head
LJ tells her bout herself
Rachel just laughs and pretends it’s not wrong
Mommy just shakes her head and acts as if she doesn’t see
Hayden still wants a daddy
To teach him how to ball
To help him get past the 4th level
To take to show and tell
Princess just wants to make him happy
And she just wants to be happy
In this death sentence…
Damn!!!
I've said it once and I shall say it again ... introspection ALWAYS brings out the best pieces. This poem is just, just mindblowing. I'll just call it "More Than Words Can Say" 'cause I have none. GREAT WRITE!
Peace and Blessings
