Nocturnes: The Little People

The little people?---yes, they once dwelt here;
diminutive in stature, humorous
in their lifestyle. They were frightened of us.
Among the foliage, green and blue, they kept
themselves---I think afraid of being stepped
on, or some far more ghastly circumstance.
They never, ever, willingly drew near.
Sometimes we had a passing glimpse or glance
until the little person leaped to duck
under some shelter. The agreed pretence
of what the ancient ones considered "luck"
was said to follow such experience.
They are long gone, since . . . well, no one knows when
for sure. They were called human beings, or men.
