Lady 'Lexandria Walking Into Church (1976)

[June, 1976; Triumphant Cross Church, Trotwood]

The first few days of June were (as they are
now) pleasantly warm, but without the heat
of fuller summer. From your parents' car
you stepped, clad in a short dress and sheer hose
(tan, with dark reinforcements at the toes),
without pretension or shoes, and without conceit.
Over the pavement's smoothest part, you crossed,
shoeless and happy, as your stockinged feet
traced out a path straight to the church's door.
This image has remained in my soul for
three decades and a half (this month), not lost
to my remembrance (which is fallibly
maintained). But, to preserve it---whole; complete---
I place it in these lines of poetry.
