At The Upper Room, 1

Empty and silent is the room, mid-day;
but dawn and dusk, they fill its modest space:
those who find here a safe and sacred place
far from what Scripture calls "fear in the way."
Their footsteps came, first, with an eager tread;
and then, too soon, a fierce and ghastly dread;
and then bewilderment---He who was dead
and buried has arisen (some folks said).
He whom the psalmists and the prophets sung---
Messiah, Christ, Jesus---then stood among
those gathered here. They looked upon His face
and wounds, and felt the comfort of His Grace,
that pardoned and refreshed each troubled soul
within the plain walls of this Cenacle.
