Epigram For King George III And The Fourth Of July, 1776

After he forced the hated tax on tea

to pay off the East India Company's

outstanding debts, Farmer George stupidly

misjudged the fierce resolve these colonies

felt to remove themselves from monarchy

and its ignoble aristrocracy;

to follow a precedent from history

and, with utmost determination, seize

what John Milton called "strenuous liberty."

Author's Notes/Comments:

George III was often referred to as "Farmer George," supposedly due to his interest in the agrarian industry of his country.

The quoted phrase appears in John Milton's verse play, Samson Agonistes.
