At The Gates Of Jerusalem; Circa, Say, 3 Or 2 BC

They seemed much like rich merchants---so we thought,

considering the caravan they brought

with them:  armed guards before and after their

long train of servants (some of them to bear;

to set camp; cook; or, else, attend the ride).

Some neighbors here might have taken alarm---

seeing this number in Jerusalem;

but they had not arrived to cause us harm.

Revered eastern Magi. those in command,

asked us about one born, "King Of Jews."

But that is Herod, who rules in this land.

His sons---those whom he has not killed---are grown.

So who is asked of, how identified,

is no celebrity that we have known.

I wonder how Herod will answer them:

if he will help them search, or just refuse---

suspecting that this may be one more ruse.

Whatever transpires, what he may decide,

is his to figure out, and his alone.
