Back-Woods Messiah,
Holy Ghost with a black powder gun
Keep the sauce simmering on the back burner
Keep the low down Lucies on the run
Make the bottom land wash-out a back yard
Trim the beard on the old willow tree
Spent all night fattening the winter hog
But I didn't leave enough for me
Pappy brewed some shine for the holiday
Get a grip on that kettle on the fire
making my way down the county road
Gonna swap me a licking for a tire
Call the boys, run 'em over with a plow mule
We'll get a jig, pick a line on the levy
I heard stories of my blessed birthing place
in the bed of my ol' daddy's Chevy
I told a story of the preacher man, Jimmy Ray
caught a case of the Swamp bottom rot
ran him down to the side of the high way
to meet Jesus and pretty buck shot
Ramble on, Jimmy Ray, ramble on
to the sound of the Good Lord's drum
Don't you know we all miss you since you been gone
but ramble on,Jimmy Ray, Ramble on
This is pretty good, imo, Tripp. I like the way it moves right along, and I like the colorful images it evokes. I have read some of your other stuff, too, and, if you will please pardon the expression: some of it isn't bad, for a guy your age. (I'm 50, so anyone under 30 is a "kid" to me. Heh).
I'm wondering if you are aware of the many online poetry workshops that are available to participate in (for free) online. I have been placing my poems in them for critique for 4 years or so, now, and I have learned a great deal about writing by doing so. Here is the link to one of them:

I don't bother telling many people here at PostPoems about the writing workshops since I get the feeling most that post here are doing it primarily as a form of enjoyment, and aren't really intersted in taking writing very seriously, but since I see what appears to be some actual talent in some of your work I thought I would let you know about these options in case you aren't aware of them already.
I enjoyed reading your work, Tripp. Keep at it.
