Chained

Death snuck up behind him on the church steps
I suppose he would want to die this way
Leaving every Sunday, 11am
On a stretcher though this rainy day
Rumor has it he heard a whisper
The second before he died
Man with the gun leaned in close
Telling him it'll flash before his eyes
Only people around to hear
His wife and teenage boys
Leaning over his body
Tears cover his face, not his own
The man with the gun ran to escape
Broken and caught by police short after
His eyes showed the same fear as the family of the dead
One of the boys ran up to the man
Throwing arms
Tearing at his own heart in the act
Said, "Why?"
One short breath
The man kept his eyes down
Pain shared with the boy, defenceless
The man caught exhaled before he spoke
"I have a wife and two boys of my own."
Confused, broken, torn
Boy remaining speechless from exhaust
After wondering if he would speak again
The man picked up his head
Eyes dry and red from crying non stop the night before
Mouth shivering
Heart torn
The man spoke once more
"I have contemplated suicide."
"Dreams of putting a date on how far I have came."
"The only thing from stopping me,
Not knowing my families pain."
