Assyrian Nightfall

Assyrian Nightfall

Fox bark echoes in the streets.

Owls fly shadowed to hidden temple nests.

Barren fields envelop skeletal remains.

Judgement shroud descends undisturbed.

Sennecharib laments.  Sargon weeps, unheard, unheeded.

Egypt’s conqueror conquered.

Babylon’s bane banished.

Persia’s persecutor prostrate.

Ninevah’s nightfall complete.

The body of history rests, flayed

Hieroglyphic tattoos tanned indistinguishable,

A memory of smoky hide.

A fresco of Euphrates silt

Swirled, twirled and unfurled to the world

Which stares momentarily, sighs and moves on

To the modern problems of Hemorrhoids;

Hammerabi set aside as just another pain in the ass.

Author's Notes/Comments:

An attempt to set-up the reader for an ananticipated word play at the end, which still makes an ironic statement.
