Giftwrap

The last moments of revelry finally end

The ice cubes in my glass slowly melt

Joining in silence some droplets of gin

Never tasted, intoxicated, or felt

Friends we met in surprise

Say their final goodbyes

And leave a faint spell of enchantment

And the fireplace burns gentler

With the soft scent of ember

As our joy mellows out in contentment

And though dawn may bring a brighter sun

Than human eyes ere looked upon

I know it's warmth will never compare

To the crumpled giftwrap and the memories there
