Ode To Reed - Dad's Guide to Life

Reed, you are an innocent, new, and happy boy.

I am witness to your steps and smiles.

Playing with spaghetti or a favorite toy,

Your young heart gives mine new miles.

Inside of me what once was faded

And jaded through time and span;

With life anew you have invaded

Upon this brand-new man.

Like an echo over your shoulder, I’m there for you.

Sometimes to help you aim high above;

Other times to make you work a bit too;

Every time to give you a father’s love.

While you grow I guard your fragile

Life with all a protector can give.

One day you will be more agile,

But for you I still will live.

Enjoy your short, short time as a child.

The real world out there is often cruel.

Balance calm days with a few that are wild,

And unless falling in love, avoid being a fool.

Make room for family and friends in life.

Above all respect and love your mother.

Take an intelligent, pretty girl for your wife,

Always set a good example as a big brother.

Don’t sit on the sidelines of life and pout.

You might miss out on success and greatness.

Take the tough road and don’t wimp out.

Never leave anything in a state of mess.

I hope your mother and I can teach

A few things to help you on your way.

Try to keep well within reach,

The ideas of patience, learning, and play.

Someday you’ll see just how much pride

And fun a dad like me can know.

You’ll have a little one with your bride,

Take in every minute watching yours grow.

And on the day when up to God I go,

I’ll still keep watch over you.

I hope I’ll still be your hero,

Because you’ll always be mine, too.
