This is a very common quote known to art historians. If you don't know what this quote is talking about, basically, it means that during the Renaissance period on onward, there were women painters, sculptors, etc. who had to take male names in order to hide their true identities. If people found out that a woman made art, these women would have to face scorn and disapproval. That's why anonymous is a woman...
this is also true of many women writers through the years..
