Ana and Mia played tag
in elementary
Around the schoolyard
they chased little girls in pink socks
At home, these girls watched their mothers
read fashion magazines
with Cindy and Christy on the cover
then lock the bathroom door
Little girls want to be just like their mothers
In middle school Ana and Mia
made some friends
read Seventeen and YM
At lunch girls threw out their chocolate pudding
hated their changing bodies
The fat girls went first
In high school, Ana and Mia
become the queen bees, pops, cheerleaders
twinkies
Ana stole best friends
lured them with carrot sticks and empty promises
Mia then took them by the hand
gave them kalediscope eyes
and perfect thighs
and bruises on their knees
Ana and Mia were never satisfied
and so began the Genocide of SS High
Girls swooned with the disposition of lovers
soon, they slunk like shadows in baggy clothes
This is for the women that still walk, and for the women
that were bones long before they lay down
This
is not beautiful
Ana, you took my mother, lover, sisters
but you can't have me
I'm just a little girl with pink socks
I won't play tag with you
