Prison

Crawling around on the soiled floorboards

Clawing at the walls

Grasping at the barred windows

Scratching at the heavy wooden door.

Screams attempt to penetrate the walls

‘No one can hear you now’.

Sobs absorbed by the crumbling plaster

Escape is all they can think about.

Banging on the walls at all hours of the day

How I wish they could be released

They scream and shout all through the night

Craving access to the outside world.

When they are weary of screaming

They sleep for hours on end

Those times are so peaceful

Those times are so quiet.

But those prisoners can keep on screaming

For however much we both want them to be released

Those demons will live forever

Inside my head.
