May Day.
Six o’clock in the morning the sound of a Brass band woke me from a deep sleep. The last hour of my sleeping period is where I have my best dreams. To say I was annoyed at being awoken by the sounds of the brass band well it was more than annoying. I felt robbed somehow of one of my wonderful dreams. Then I remembered today was the First of May The day we commemorate work. Today is the day when the workers march to various political meetings and Politicians open their mouths wide to promise better conditions for the workers. Promises that they have no intention of keeping just to quieten the masses of the working population.
My next question, should I get up and go to listen or indeed march with the Red Flags Flying; should I attend the workers parade and listen to the propaganda being spouted by the different political parties? I decided not to go. Today I would spend my time in Fairyland at least the Fairies are honest and need no political parties to govern Fairyland. I reluctantly got out of my warm bed, washed and shaved, dressed myself and went downstairs to make my fried breakfast of sausages, eggs and bacon with fried bread. A cup or two of sweet tea to finish off and then I would be free to wander in Fairyland.
Walking through my back garden I saw that all was well with the promise of many good vegetables, fruits and salads. Walking through the back gate I entered Fairyland. Here I was inundated with many questions. Why was the brass band playing? Why were so many people on the way? Taking a seat on one of the overgrown toadstools I told the fairies how the Human workers formed unions to get the Factory Owners to make better conditions for people to work under. How the workers should be better paid for the hard work they were doing. How medical arrangements were made to help the sick and the many workers that were involved in nasty accidents. I spent well over an hour and a half telling the Fairies about the first of May and what it stood for. They were very interested and slowly they wandered off and I was left alone. Getting up from my toadstool I wandered to the old oak and made myself comfortable.
Later a group of Fairies approached me and told me that they wanted to form a Union of workers to help make their work easier. I had to smile as I heard what they wanted and told them they had no need for a Union. Her Majesty who is a very wise Queen kept an eye on all that goes on in Fairyland. No Fairy had to work under bad conditions in fact I told them that if the Humans could use magic like the Fairies they too would have no need for Unions. I heard music coming from a distance and nearly fell off the large oak tree root that I was sitting on. Into view came the Toad Orchestra. Following the toads were Fairies with red flags flying. See Mr. Shaw we now have our own union and we in future will hold a day for the workers. On this day no one will work and to finish off the day we will hold a Fairy Dance. You are of course invited. There will be Fairy Cakes and Elderberry wine and the Toad Orchestra will be the musicians.
I protested if the First of May is to be a holiday where no one has to work then why are the Toad Orchestra playing music for you all to dance, they will be working making the music for you all. Is this right on a day set aside for the workers? The Fairies would not accept this they told me that the Toads volunteered to play for the Fairy dance. I decided that it was harmless and said no more. Now if you are wakened by the Toad Orchestra playing and the Fairies marching on the First of May you will know that they too now celebrate the day of no work. Bern
