The Fall.
Slowly she fell, sitting in the car all I could do was watch. All was in slow motion five steps up to the Jewelers shop door. Her right hand felt for the handrail. Then it struck me there was no handrail it had been removed. All I could do was to watch her falling backwards, backwards and her head struck the step.
I tried to get out of the car to go to her assistance. Instead of me pushing the door to open it. I for some unknown reason or perhaps shock pulled the door inwards towards me. I at last realized my mistake and got out to go to her assistance. At the same time a car pulled up and two men sprang out of the car and went to her assistance. I saw the large pool of blood on the floor. By this time the Jeweler had come out of the shop.
One of the men asked the Jeweler to call the Ambulance. At the same time she brought a chair so that the two men could seat her. One of the men ran to a building and brought a thick blanket, which they wrapped around my wife’s shaking body. Shock had set in. The ambulance arrived and I thanked the two men for their timely help and followed the Ambulance men into the Ambulance.
One went to drive the Ambulance the other asked my Wife a few questions that he wrote on a formula. Please tell me your name, how old are you, please tell me your address, are you in pain. All the time the ambulance man was asking his questions the driver of the Ambulance was using his siren. I did not realize that that there was so much traffic on the road.
We arrived at the Hospital, The driver came to the back and with the help of the Ambulance man that had been asking my wife all of the questions, The pair of them pushed my wife into the hospital with me following them as fast as I could go with my walking stick. One called to me take a seat and off they went into one of the rooms. Thirty minutes later my wife had been examined under a computer-tomo-graph twice the next day she was examined again.
Four days later my wife left the hospital and arrived home. Giddy spells plagued her for days also the bruising on her arms legs and body were also causing her discomfort. Now the real difficulties started, bathing, washing, dressing and walking, all an effort, as for shopping I now know what one takes for granted when one goes shopping. Lists are made one can forget so easily the odd vegetable of the butter not to forget something to drink.
My wife has given the whole matter in the hands of a Lawyer that specializes in such cases. The Jeweler came to see my wife and pressed a cheap wristwatch into her hands. My wife told her that she had a half a dozen wristwatches at home and certainly did not need this wristwatch from the Jeweler. She left in a hurry and left my wife with the watch on the table in front of her.
We thought now that the matter was in the hands of the Lawyer we did not have to worry about things any more. What a mistake she the Jeweler wrote a letter addressed to my wife. She claims that my wife was carrying two plastic shopping bags in her hands as she came to go into the Jewelers shop also that my wife is too old to be driving a car. This is in my eyes a form of blackmail. My wife has been accident free driving for over fifty years. She learnt to drive in London Great Britain and again here in Graz We have driven to any from Great Britain all accident free and as long as my wife holds a driving license the only person that can take the permission to drive away from her is the Official Doctor who is in control of such things.
I will let you know what happens when we hear from the Lawyer. Have a good week from Bern.
