Guess who?

Remember way back when we first met

Twelve years old in the Graigie Woods.

My taste didn’t suit at first,

You coughed and coughed

But we persevered,

Then you did ten a day.

At thirteen we were introduced

To cheap cider,

Oh how I laughed when you

Threw up on the back road.

We discovered vodka at fourteen

But could not take it with coke,

Only lemonade.

Then your older brother sealed

Our friendship forever with a bit of blow

On your seventeenth birthday .

Now in your twenties I live in the darkest

Of your nights.

Where sweet dreams dare not go

And imagination could be fact

If only you would let it.

Fear and loathing haunt you

Like the ghosts of sickness past.

But I am always here for you,

Even when the weakness makes

You cry.

I banish innermost fears

For I am the one true friend.

Love me and hate me in

Any measure you like,

I drive you now,

Control the mind

The body

Make you sweat

Give out stomach pains

Even blackouts.

You would sell your soul

For me,

Steal and kill for me

Just to have me with you.

Never to leave.

Eventually I will kill you,

But until then dear friend

Let your hands shake

In anticipation

For I am the best

You will ever have…

For I am addiction.
