The Back Street Businessman 1954.

There was a faint knock at the door

Ah, that must be my.. Client.

Dead on time.

I knew it couldn’t be the Rent man

Or the Coal man or even that small

Gentleman from the Coop.

Their knock was always so loud and brash.

It is strange when some people

Desperately want your attention

But are so scared and ashamed

That they give the faintest of knocks

Half hoping you will not hear.

I opened the door,

There stood the most tragic of figures.

Sixteen if a day.

"Come in come in."

"There is no reason to cry my dear,

Nobody will ever know

It will all be over soon

Trust me."

"Please forgive the state

Of the room

I am so busy these days

No time to tidy."

"Just you lie on the bed,

That's it."

"Now take your pants off

It is alright, no need to be embarrassed

I have seen it all before."

"Here take this

It is what I call a sort of drink on the house

It helps with proceedings."

"An abortifacients concoction

I make myself,

It makes for a nice little whine."

"Now I hate to bring up money,

But are you paying it all now

Or shall I get my

Payments book."

There was a loud brash knock at the door.

"Oh do excuse me dear

I'll be back shortly,

all dues must

be paid."
