It can be hard to create
When you aren't in a space
Where you feel safe.
What I mean is
To be able to really let your guard down
To be yourself. That's when the ideas come.
I've been way too "on" lately
Having to be personable
Always busy, answering questions
Taking orders, making others
Feel at home when I, myself
Am not.
So let me take a minute and
Give you an aesthetic
A picture of comfort
Or what that means to me.
First one up in the morning
Pale blue light, early morning light
Coming in the dining room
Lighting up the front of the house
Reflecting off the table and floors
Making the mahogany and oak shine
Only one awake, the stillness and
the quietness are just for me.
Early evening oranges are now
Dancing in the kitchen
My cat greeting me
Barely in the door I hear his purr.
Long car rides late at night
The crisp, clean white of the moon
Up above, helping the stars
Giving me direction ahead.
Slipping on a soft warm shirt
After a long hot shower.
The familar feeling and scent
Like a hug from your best friend.
Walking in the door
Of a place not your own
Surrounded by friends and smiles
The family that you chose
Finding those people that
Just seem to get you
Understand your mind,
Accept your whole person
Love you unconditionally
Inspire you, comfort you
Being with them really is
The best feeling in the world
Finally, dancing!
My favorite way to move
Swaying to an old sweet song
Gliding across the floor with someone else
Twitching your hips to the beat
A smile that won't stay off your lips
These are pictures, snippets if you will
Of some things that make me happy
Without them, life would be hard
And cheerless, and pointless!
So I wanted to slow down
Take a moment, and paint
With my words, a picture
Of what comfort means to me
This is a gift for my readers
An aesthetic of home.
