Hands full of red clay
and dry sand,
quickly, carelessly tossed,
into that empty hole;
eyes and minds,
a thousand other places,
the grieved,
watching clouds,
checking watches
or phones,
simply trying too hard
to be here,
and somewhere else.

Thank you Dear! Funerals are fascinating to me when viewed at a distance. Now that I have the time and energy, I'm writing again;-)
Funerals
I'm from a small town and funerals are major gatherings - you make it to the wake or the funeral, the house, or the dinner afterwards, always bringing a dish, always sending flowers. And yes. The hole is empty.
Thank you, Dear Lady A!
It's the same here. I only crawl from beneath my rock when required, but I'd rather go to a funeral than a wedding. They always seem more real, more joyous, more fun for those on the periphery. There's a sadness, a forced good humor to weddings and feeling of artifice, while at funerals, everything is naked and real, upbeat or melancholy.

and perhaps its limited to my area, but have you noticed that the men, not in boots, all seem to be wearing shoes that no longer fit? The fidget with them more than a second grader who needs to pee! ;-)
