The Forgotten Day
There was once a day long ago
A day all the good people knew well
When the sublime and grateful
Gathered nearer the Eternal Bells.
A day of everlasting love came to be
Beneath a fiery eastern light
Came upon this blessed Earth
So the people could delight
In one lonely child’s Holy Birth.
As each century passed
Those who practiced forgiveness
Knew their future was cast
While empires rose and fell
More spoke of everlasting peace
While the great evil was released.
Believers continued to keep
That helm of Providence
With faith and reason all blessings increased.
Once a year on that cherished day
Amid the bleakness of winter’s dark
The eastern light continued to shine
In even the most desperate of hearts.
Then there came a time
When the light began to wane
The people were no longer allowed
To even utter the day’s very name.
None could fathom how it came to pass
When His worldly sacrifice
Was lost to the ego’s selfish stance
It happened as it always must
Piecemeal and without warrant
The winter weeps for daylight dust.
To all those that still believe
In the fire of the soul’s yearning
To be at once proud and free
Stand before man and God
And proclaim your solemn right:
Merry Christmas to All!
And to All a Good Night!
